Wedding … an emotional investment. Taxing on your pockets. Howsoever planned, big or small budget, the smallest things add on to the final bill. The candid photo-shoots, the royal cake, the flowers, the dresses, the invitations … A long long list. Each new idea adds to the cost, and you never realize.
And when it comes to Indian weddings, something as minor as Hindu wedding invitations can ask for a lot. Want to cut down slightly? Well, why not?! If you do now, you might add it to your honeymoon budget!
Start with planning everything well in advance, along with maintaining a balance between what you need and what you want. Lead your expenses to things that matter and miss out those that are bulging out of your budget.
Being friends with both the bride and groom, I had recently received these real fancy wedding invitations from both of them. The bride’s card was superbly fancy, initially pleasing to look at, but later on as she started cringing about the way these card-designers were expensive brought out the truth.
It’s better to decide on cards that are informative and helpful to the guest rather than being a show-piece.
Those pretty and beautiful multi-layered cakes, huge in size. You cut it, people enjoy it, and the rest goes to waste. Yep, sad but true. Many wedding organizers have reported to have thrown out or distributed cakes among the staff.
Gone are the days of limited baking, simple cakes these days too are made to look good and taste awesome. After invitation cards, like mentioned above about Hindu invitations, cakes are the next big things that can be said no to. So, miss out on those expensive, several-tiered cakes. With changing choices, there are now options like single-toned or naked cakes. After all, the cake shouldn’t look prettier than you, eh?!
Weddings and Music. Hire top-class musicians to perform or hire some music students. One will burst out of your budget; the other will help you save a lot. Make sure to mention the name of your band in your wedding card as well, though it might not suit Hindu wedding invitations. If you’d have planned things in advance, you can fish out some music schools of your city, talk to the students there. Let them know what numbers you’d like them to play, and give them space to build their own playlist.
Flowers make the most beautiful decorations, especially at a wedding. Isn’t it just synonymous, like love, flowers, weddings … Well no! Putting a bouquet or single flower in every nook and corner, the exotic out-of-season flowers might be soothing for the guests. But come to think of your budget as well. Flowers, exotic or not, if out of season, will cost you more than triple. And fade out the next day. So, do place flowers, but at selected few places. You can put in flowers from your garden and even grass strands to make it look different and good.
Party All Night
Browsing through invites, specially the Hindu invitations, I notice late night reception parties, which means an add to your final charge of the venue. Parties and get-together are sure to happen; you can’t totally give it a miss. However, what can be done is leave the wedding venue and book another smaller and simpler venue for late-night reception party. Do mention timing and venue of the wedding procession and reception separately in the card. And thus your after-hours expenses would be cut down heavily. Also, since the venue of reception party will be a smaller and less fancy place, the charges will be lot lesser than organizing it at wedding venue.
Return gifts look better at kiddy birthday parties. The return gifts from a wedding land in the deepest corner of cupboards, stored there forever. Better not to lavishly spend money on them. But in case you can’t do away with the idea, try gifting something that’s edible. Also if you mention ‘no gifts’ in your wedding invite, people might not even expect a return gift.
After all advises, you might also find many other things to help you in your budget, but in the end, happiness too matters. So do pamper yourself to keep you happy, but make sure you are not left cribbing later for having crossed the budget!
